WELCOME TO THE DES MOINES (Hubbel Ave.) Kmart TOUR!

Hey what's going on...it's been five years since I've updated this part of the website?  Wow....anyways I actually visited the east side of Des Moines the other day and took some pictures that were worth posting.  Take a look...you can tell what new photos are up because of the difference...it's a shame when my Cell Phone (LG Trax CU 575 from Cingular/AT&T) takes much better pictures than a camera with a flash!

I was actually amazed to find a Venture shopping cart long after the Venture chain went bankrupt...and ironically Kmart took over their University Ave. location, but found a Venture cart here at the east side Kmart...I guess the east side needed new carts, as the University Ave. location has blue shopping carts.  Live and learn, I guess....and after all this time after the Penske Auto Center closed in 2002, signage is still up for it in the store (pics below) but not on the building (though you can still see where it was mentioned on the building.)

Here is the floor plan of the store.

I made it myself and It's not COMPLTELY accurate but you get an idea of where everything's at.

Here is the sign out by Hubbel Ave.

To the left of the sign is KFC/Taco Bell and to the right of the sign is the new McDonald's.

Here's a closeup of the sign.

Love the blurriness....and there's a Kentacobell next door! Sweet!

Here is the exterior of the building.

Suprisingly this came out good while taking it while the car was moving. Built in 1971.

Here's a Venture shopping cart.

It was nice to see a piece of nostalgia (though the east side is WAY full of it by their look.)

Here is the front of the store.

After I took this picture the customer service guy looked at me as if I were checking him out....EW.

Here is the Health & Beauty/Pharmacy Department.

This is the back aisle looking forward.

UPDATE: When I was here in November, the Olan Mills Portrait Studio was no more.

The Best Thing In The History of Kmart!!!!!!!!!!!!
bigkmarthubbelselfcheckout.jpg
The Kmart Self Checkouts! There are four of them, and I used checkout 3. I made a HUGE scene!

This is the self-checkout I used. IT WAS SO COOL!

You can see the Little Caesar's in the background. The stuff I purcahsed is under the checkout lite.

UPDATE: Register 15 is no longer there.

Checkouts 12 & 13 are normal looking ones, but 14 & 15 have the old look from the "Big Kmart" years.

I recently visited this store early November 2007.

Not being at this store since I took pictures of it last, the auto center signage is still here.

I also found this though closed since 2002.

This was in automotive (duh!) and the signage was still there...I guess they're lazy!
